Losing a couple of stars here because of some vile antisemitism. This was written in 1942, makes you think.
Otherwise a regular Paris based Maigret. It is Simenon's ability to evoke a place or a psychological state with just a few words that is so impressive.

Simenon seems to be a master at writing a crime thriller that has numerous twists and turns, dead-ends and quality character development and yet, however fast-paced, he is able to keep the reader up to speed. Almost as though Simenon was going to tell this story, regardless of whether or not I was reading it, he picks up the reader and manages to fling them into Maigret's slipstream with some very appreciable and characteristic flair. I look forward to encountering Maigret again!

One of my favourite Maigrets so far. A great plot and I would never have put it together, although the clues were there.
A great cast of characters and superb all the way through. I felt sorry for one but am happy with his resolution.
It was a but jarring reading that Maigret is living in his apartment as opposed to the Loire valley he moved to in the previous novel, maybe these books are standalone and not really a sequential series. Just assumed little details like that would be continuous.

This was a quick book and fun. Maigret is interesting as a policeman. Howevever, it was a little hard to follow.
