So I first got this book when I was in my senior year of high school and had just read A. J. Jacobs' "Year of Living Biblically." I didn't particularly latch on to this book at the time and abandoned it after a couple chapters. I thought her sitting on the roof was idiotic and who was this weirdo. Now though, having entered adulthood a bit more, I was glad to go back and rediscover it, having read other pieces of RHE which hit closer to home for me. Is it a bit of a publicity stunt? Oh yes. Does she do some weird things that don't really make tons of sense in most people's theology? Uh huh. But at the same time she does explore some of the weirder or more aggravating quirks of evangelical culture's idea of what a good Godly woman is, and she's funny and relatable to boot. This book will not shake the earth under your feet, but it will get you thinking about some things and also finding the points in your life that you can focus on your own gifts and strengths. I enjoyed it immensely.
An interesting and fun read, and not really that controversial, in my opinion. Evans's point is that post-1950s Christianity has picked out certain verses in the bible, out of context, that show how the perfect Christian woman should behave and fit into the church. By living out the "biblical" qualities mentioned, Evans explores the deeper meanings and lessons of those verses, to come to her own conclusions of what she should be as a believer and as a woman. I liked RHE's sense of humor and enjoyed her exploration of Jewish culture and tradition.

So, so amazing. Held Evans is fair to be respectful and open to learning from all the different people she meets in her journey. I’m so grateful I read this.
