This is not a book about religious fundamentalism, nor is it a book about erasing what the Bible says, it's an honest insight into a woman doing the best she can, beating herself up when she's struggling and lifting herself up through the strength of her faith and the people around her.
As I sit on the cusp of motherhood I have a new perspective on what being a woman of God looks like, a new respect for the women contained within Scripture and a new desire to treasure the women of valour in my life.

I love a book that makes you think - and this book is one of those. Rachel's journey is interesting, and it really helped me put the idea of "biblical womanhood" into perspective and figure out what I believe about it.
Keeping it real
Evans does an excellent job creating an informative and journeying take about what it means to be a woman of the Bible. Her story had me rethinking my own ideas and asking more questions about God, the Bible, and women. I appreciated most the chapter that highlighted the impossible Proverbs 31 woman because I had given up on ever being close to that standard. I love my new understanding of that chapter of the Bible has praise from a husband to his wife. Evans was so fun to read as she never took herself too seriously and frankly shared both her failures and successes. If you're looking for a book that will entertain and stretch your way of thinking, then this is the book for you.

I learned so much from all of RHE's books, this one was no exception. I highly recommend for anyone struggling with the role of women in religion.

Those offended by the premise of this book miss the point Evans is making. Her purpose is not to mock Scripture, which in her other works she makes clear that she hold in high regard. Her purpose, rather, is to mock an extreme evangelical position regarding the term "biblical womanhood" itself.
Though I do not agree with her hermeneutic, I do wholeheartedly agree that creating a more timeless understanding of what it means to function as a woman created in the image of God for the glory of God is necessary.
Humorous, transparent and thought-provoking, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in women's studies and Christianity, regardless of your position concerning gender roles.

A really beautiful book. Rachel Held Evans was both an inspiring religious thinker and a wonderful writer. She might also have been a little crazy. The book itself is best when it focuses on the Bible and reactions to it; it falls flat a bit when it gets into bigger subjects
All though I do not always see eye to eye with Rachel Held Evans, I could not put this down. It was not only eye opening but inspiring. Not to mention I have pulled a new favorite prayer from its text. It hit me hard and fast and I will not soon forget the feelings and curiousities left behind.
