Painful at times, but a lived-in and real agony of a novel. Ava I'm rooting for you, always.

Most adults are just hollowed out. You watch them try to fill themselves up with booze or money or God or fame or whatever they worship, and it all rots them from the inside until nothing is left but the money or booze or God they thought would save them.

As you might be able to tell from my rating, I did not like this book.

Which really made me so upset, I wanted to like this so bad! After reading The Fault in Our Stars, I was determined to try to read everything he's written, but it just doesn't seem to be working out for me so far. I read Will Grayson Will Grayson by him and David Levithan, and I far preferred David's Will to John's.

SpoilerAll that being said, let's move on to this one. First of all, I feel like the description is misleading. I thought it was going to be much more of a mystery. But instead it's just a contemporary dealing with mental health. That's it.

Don't get me wrong, I love stories featuring mental illness. I personally suffer from Anxiety and depression. In fact, one of the only things truly worth while, was the mental health aspect. Everything else pretty much sucked. The mystery doesn't actually add all that much in the first place. It's just kind of there. More of a plot device so Aza can meet up with a boy really.

Her best friend straight up sucks. There, I said it. I don't care for Daisy at all, she was kind of interesting with the whole fanfiction thing, but then she ruined it by inserting her best friend into it and making her seem absolutely terrible. Don't get me wrong, Aza could try harder, but she has a lot on her plate too. It just seems like Daisy doesn't even care sometimes. And I really, really, really don't like her.

The romance isn't terrible, but it definitely isn't great. I think John could have skipped ahead a few years or something at the very end, and showed Aza gradually getting a bit better of a handle on things. Then she meets up with the guy (I've forgotten his name) and they could've tried it out again. Or he could've stuck by her while she got her therapy until she could get to the point of kissing. At least something else than what we got! It feels like John just gave up on the romance. Therefor, why should anyone else care?

I have a lot more I could say, but this review is already long enough. So in short, I only gave this book 1.5 because of the mental health rep, otherwise it would definitely be 1 star.

i can’t say that i dislike this book, but i definitely do not have any type of affinity for it.
