A must read for anyone! Especially if you like female leads and revolutions :)
The memoir of a revolutionary isn't the kind of book I thought I'd enjoy, but I really did. To be honest South American politics doesn't interest me particularly, but the human factor and the practicalities of revolution do.
This memoir is a stark look at the realities of underground work and especially the toll on the people and families it touches. Revolution is exciting, dangerous, and terrifying. Being raised in a revolutionary family, Carmen doesn't really have any choice about joining the resistance, but it makes you wonder (as she does) what it would have been like to have a "normal" life in Canada.
I really loved learning about the activities and techniques of the resistance, but what I didn't love was the complicated and sometimes confusing politics that were a big part of this book.
Recommended for people who want to know what revolution is *really* about, and for those interested in South American politics.

Great memoir, but too quick of a wrap up at the end!

Brilliant! Very well-written, engaging, exciting, heart-wrenching, and eye-opening. I can definitely see why this won Canada Reads 2012! One of my favourite reads of the year!

This book came highly recommended by a lot of different people, which might have contributed to me judging it more harshly, but I thought the first two thirds really dragged. The final third once she reaches adulthood does live up to the hype. Overall a good book worth reading.
