This book was fantastic, one of the better books of 2022.

DNF. I know it’s a cult favorite, but I just couldn’t get into it. The characters seemed like cliches.

Fun

I attended HS & college in Providence in the 80s and would say the author captures the the era's people and places very well.

After competing the book it felt unfinished. Later I learned it's the first book in a trilogy and while that made me feel a little better about the book and myself it didn't elevate the reading experience. I initially thought I might read the other books to see it through but as the days passed I'm sure I'll stop here.

I think most fans of fiction would like City on Fire. The story is fine and the details are good enough to satisfy a local. People who don't particularly like fiction will probably wind up in 2 star territory for the lack of character development, occasionally poor dialogue and implausible story arcs. I have a hard time letting go and that's a major impediment to enjoying (semi) realistic fiction.

I’m a sucker for anything Rhode Island related. Loved all of the references of places and figures this tiny state has to offer. Also a sucker for anything mob related. Only complaint is that I think too many main players met their demise far too soon in this planned out trilogy.
adventurous dark tense fast-paced

I really enjoyed this mob story set in Providence (RI) in the mid-80s. It's one of those stories that develops from one " mishap" and takes entire families to the grave. I also think that Don Winslow is very good at taking such an exploited topic and writing a story that, despite despite being preceded by endless variations on the theme, remains compelling and doesn't fall into the usual clichés.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

This book is like a parody of The Sopranos. The author uses “gangster talk” for effect. He obviously “don’t” know how this comes across. It’s awful but once the reader gets used to it the story rolls on like a cheap TV show and it’s easy to get involved and finish. I’m not sure I’m up for the sequel however.
