I have read several of Don Winslow’s books - ‘The Force’, ‘The Border’, ‘The Cartel’ and others and really enjoyed them. I pre ordered this book on the strength of his others. I thought his storylines and characterisations were excellent and indeed were the main strength of the books.
This book did not possess these qualities to the same degree. The plot I found to be convoluted, twisting and turning at times in a contrived way. Danny’s prodigal mother was unconvincing as was the biography developed for her in the book. Overall not up to Winslow’s usual standard. Pity!

Waited for months for this, and was not disappointed. Winslow knows how to weave a story that is difficult to extricate oneself from. His characters ooze authenticity, and the plot is pulled from the headlines. So what if there was never a Providence war between the Irish and Italian mobs. That was Boston. These are not mob hi-fliers, but the mid-level goons just trying to feed their kids and keep a roof over their heads. Winslow doesn't ask you to show sympathy but, as many mob stories have in the past, he attempts to demonstrate these are humans. Very flawed humans.
Not my favorite Winslow book, it feels a little tired, the beats a lot familiar, but they are still good beats and familiar is just fine these days.
