3.5 stars. Subject matter wasn't really my jam, a lot of dumb emotional men making stupid decisions, the general storyline reminded me of Peaky Blinders, but the writing was really good, kept my attention and read the whole thing in a day. Fine as a standalone and doesn't leave me craving the next two books in the series.

Being from Paterson NJ and coming of age in the 70’s my Italian family was very familiar with the mafia at that time. My Grandfather was a Judge. Inevitable in my mind. So reading about these groups in Rhode Island both the Italian and Irish was interesting and revealing. The main character Danny Ryan was smart, capable and wishing life was different. I couldn’t help but appreciate his predicament and his status. The story unfolds easily and The ending was interesting as well and kept me entertained throughout. Looking forward to the next two books.

I’m gonna be honest I only read this because Austin Butler is set to star in the adaptation. I can’t say I’m much a mafia book person but I was still relatively entertained and am considering continuing the series.
