A rip-roaring read about the Irish and Italian mobs in 1980’s Providence, RI. First in a planned trilogy —I can’t wait for the second installment!

God this really did just get better and better as it went along. A true modern-day godfather, and it's not even shy about wearing its influence on its sleeves. It has all the wiseguy shit and the tropes you'd expect, but it somehow keeps it all fresh despite my seeing this kind of story half a dozen times before. Danny Ryan is without a doubt one of the most relatable and interesting mob protagonists in any piece of fiction and his character breakdown in the third act is so unbelievably engrossing. That's to say nothing of the story's pacing, which threw me for a loop in the first few chapters but quickly made sense as you follow the spiral deeper and deeper into the irish-italian war. There are certain characters and side stories that felt a little underdeveloped (Marvin comes to mind), but the vast majority of characters were so well realized and colorful considering the book's relatively short length. I felt and cared for pretty much everyone in the story, and even someone as despicable as Sal I found myself genuinely sad for. Liam can fuck right off though, the little prick.
Can't wait to see how this story ends and am so excited to check out Don Winslow's other work after I finish the rest of the trilogy. Hard to believe this flew under my radar for so long.
