Fun story. I would have loved it in late elementary or junior high, not as much as an adult. The audiobook was narrated with a little too theatric accent, so it was a bit annoying to listen to at times.

A good ol' fashioned Western! Except of course the bandits are girls and they're not exactly bandits. Maude March and her sister Sally head west to find their uncle when an unfortunate accident leaves them orphans. Along with the usual trials of traveling across the open land on horseback they find that Maude is wanted as a horse theif, a bank robber, and a murderer! Told from Sally's point of view, the characters in this story are all possess that perfect amount of old west charm as if they came straight out of the dime novels Sally enjoys so much. A fine narration by Lee Adams lends the right spirit to Sally's voice.

It did take me a while to get started with this one, and if my iPod had not failed on me (once again!) I probably would have stopped at disc one. But I'm glad I got to finish the adventure - Sally was a likeable travel companion.

How much I enjoy listening to a book has a lot to do with who the narrator is and how well they match the story. I loved the southern drawl of this woman and it made it more fun to listen to. This was a great listen. A true western (there is some shootin' - so beware if you are of the opposed type), everyone in our family loved it. It's on my "to own" list.

I loved this book! What a fun read. At first I was confused why it was in the perspective of the younger sister, but then it all made sense. Her comments and descriptions were funny. The story was adventurous. I hope the author writes a sequel!

My daughter (age 9) thoroughly enjoyed this book but was little annoyed about the bait and switch revealed at the beginning. This is not a book about an adventuresome girl riding through the Old West. Maude March is a demure and somewhat prissy 15 year old who knows next to nothing outside of her comfortable life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and about the same time that Jesse James' gang is riding around. Circumstances (and her dime novel loving 12 year old sister) push Maude to make a midnight flight to Independence, Missouri. Sally March is the one with most of the ideas and an even temper. While Maude toughens up considerably by the second half of the book, she remains moody throughout in a stereotypical feminine way. The two of them end up on the wrong side of the law due to one accident after another, and newspaper reports (which don't mention Sally at all) horrify Maude by portraying her as a madwoman and criminal mastermind. The back of our book reprint one of these newspaper reports, and we took this to be actual events from the book.

When kept us interested was the descriptions of range riding. We heard about hunting and fishing and prepping food, taking care of horses, sewing up wounds, surviving blizzards, and protecting gear. Their trip from Cedar Rapids toward Independence is shown on a map at the beginning of the book, and they are on the road for months. Altogether it was a very good story, I just wish we hadn't started it with a misunderstanding of the main characters.

For a YA novel, slow as molasses up a hill on a cold day. The characters are sympathetic and realistic and the wild west setting is historically true to form, but it's also what makes this book drag on and on. I was more interested in Sally, Maude's sister, than I was in her.
