Interesting concept. Honestly? Too much sex. I want an interesting storyline, maybe some romantic interaction, but I didn’t choose to read a romance novel for a reason.

In my quest to read every book I own, I picked this one up that has been in a TBR pile since I was a kid. I had high hopes for it. Those hopes did not hold up.

Killashandra is an unlikable protagonist. She is arrogant and conceited, which can work for characters, but she's also a hypocrite. She constantly judged another female character for certain thoughts and actions while having those thoughts and wanting to do those same things. Also, I recognize that this story was written in the 1980s, but I got 20% of the way through the book and realized that Killashandra had not had any shown conversations with another named female character, which was very jarring.

Killashandra was a bit of a Mary Sue, a comment I hate to make but fits exceptionally well in this case.

I have enjoyed the first few Pern novels so decided to give this one a go.

I liked the concept and the world building. But not much else. Lots of tedious parts of the book where it drags on. The pace is weird, most of the book was building up to cutting crystal and the danger of the storms, but when we finally get there it's such a small part of the book.

Killashandra grows in skill and status but not emotionally or as a person. She's not that likable, having a high ego and not much regard for the other characters. Her relationship with the guild master is a huge power imbalance and doesn't come off as healthy at all.

Despite that I probably will attempt the sequel at some point.. In hopes that it is better. I am curious to see how she deals with the long term effects of being a crystal singer

I love the pseudo-everyman perspective of this book, walking the reader through a learning experience and adventure that requires unique talents without making the audience feel as though this is a thing that could never, ever happen to us.
As usual, Anne McCaffrey's storytelling is spot on.
