This was a fantastic start to a new fantasy trilogy. I’m definitely into continuing to see how this world expands. It was a really cool magic system and I enjoyed the characters. I’m intrigued to see where this plot is going because everything is a mess and the war about to come will be intense.
3.75 ⭐️ I absolutely loved this world and the power of invoking the spirits of ancestors for strength and power. It has a huge cast with POVs switching every chapter. I found it difficult to grasp who everyone was and where they were throughout the first half of the book (reason for my rating) but once I felt caught up I was fully immersed. The characters were engaging; all complex and nuanced due to the stories they've been told their whole lives and the classes they grew up. It has great plot twists and kept me on my toes.
I'm really looking forward to continuing this series.
Thank you to Orbit for approving the arc.

I was very into this at first. Unfortunately it got more mystical as time went on and I stopped caring.

A Song of Legends Lost is an epic debut fantasy novel combining advanced technology and ancestral magic. This multi-POV story has a diverse cast with thrilling stories and strong character identities. The world building is immersive and the plot has countless twists and turns. Every time I thought I finally figured out what was happening, everything would get turned upside down on its head. A Song of Legends Lost was a refreshingly unique and exhilarating story, and I cannot WAIT to see where the series goes!
Highly recommend going into this one blind! It’s so much fun when you have no idea what’s happening at first. Makes later revelations so cool and satisfying!

This EPIC fantasy is truly a masterful exploration of world building and ancestral connections.
The synopsis barely touches on the depth of this story - a rich world building experience, a deep dive into the ways that the people of the Nine Lands connect to the spirits of their ancestors, and a beautiful weaving of the spiritual and scientific worlds - all with the backdrop of political unrest between people groups.
There were a few POVs we get to explore, which gives us a rounded view of the goings on across the Nine Lands, and then getting to see the intersection of the storylines.
A few minor reasons why this didn't quite hit as a 5 star read: There were too many characters to keep them all straight - even with the listing at the start of the book, in the moment of reading I struggled to remember who was who while we jumped between POVs. There was also one POV that we meet in Part 1, a POV that I loved reading and following - but then the character is not in Part 2-3, so we go roughly 300 pages without continuing the story? Structurally, I understand why we left that storyline to build in the background, but as a fascinating character, it was disappointing to not get to see this character for so long.
As a visual reader, there were also times I struggled to visualize certain scenes.
Audiobook: I think the narrator did a fantastic job at bringing this story to life - his use of voice inflection to convey the "rougher" characters in contrast to the "heroes" helped build a lot of tension that lent itself to building some really great dynamics. It did read a little slow - I typically read at 3x speed for epic fantasy, and I had this bumped up to 3.5x instead.

A Song of Legends Lost is a new high fantasy with ancestral spirit magic, technology, and politics. The world building is unique and I was left wondering who is truly the enemy?? My unpopular opinion is that I simply didn't feel invested in or connected to the characters. While parts of the story were interesting, my interest wasn't truly piqued until the last 2 chapters. For a book that's 600+ pages, that's a lot to get through before feeling genuine interest. I didn't want to DNF it though because parts of the story were interesting at different times. I would've liked more explanation about how the tech and magic worked, but maybe that'll be for book two. I'm curious enough to continue the series as I really want to know more about the grey bloods and tech/magic.
