A thoroughly enjoyable, if long, epic science fantasy that offers unique worldbuilding, vibrant (and multiple) POV characters, and a plot that kept me on my toes despite how much was going on. I put be a novel that blends fantasy and science fiction and this book does it extremely well.

The standout quality of this book, aside from the unique world, is how organic Ayinde's worldbuilding is: despite having an incredibly rich, rather complex plot, everything about it and the world is revealed very naturally through plot or dialogue. I did get a bit lost at times as there are several subplots and a wide cast of characters to keep track of, but was able to resituate myself each time.

All in all, an excellent, thought-provoking read; despite it being the first of a trilogy, I think it holds its own as a stand-alone novel. Looking forward to reading more, whenever more is available.

Tried to do too much, too fast and the worldbuilding and character depth suffered because of it. It jumps around so much that I was never clear on who was with which clan and what their various objectives were. It was VERY apparent that this was a debut.

Would have considered DNFing at 30% if I hadn’t been reading it for a book club. I was just too uninvested and bored slogging through it.

Just a couple chapters before part 4 of the book (maybe 70-ish %?) is when something interesting FINALLY happens and I started to care about reading Jinao’s POV. I will say the ending of the book was interesting and unique (took it from an 2-star back up to a 3-star) and makes me consider continuing the trilogy. Hopefully book 2 will rise above being the slog that this book was. It MIGHT succeed if they don’t go nuts adding more POVs to dilute what they finally built.
