I picked this up primarily for the sequel to Serena, but all of the stories were great (and depressing).

Short and sharp. Standouts: L'homme blesse, Last bridge burned, and Ransom.

possible one of the worst books i’ve read i’ll have to be honest

If you have not yet read a book by Ron Rash - do it. You're missing out on one of America's best voices. I first fell in love with Rash's writing in college, when I read Serena for a class about Appalachian literature (liberal arts, right?). Anyway, Rash is incredible at setting a scene and making you feel a connection to characters in just a handful of pages. Every single short story in this collection sings.

I also enjoyed reading more about Serena, the so-called Lady Macbeth of Appalachia. I always loved Serena as a character because she defied the cultural norms of her time, even if that meant being perceived as heartless. The Novella "In the Valley" provides you with a deeper understanding of Serena as a character, as well as her ambitions in the male-dominated timber industry.

So conclusion - if you haven't read Ron Rash yet, do. But start somewhere else. I recommend Serena with every bone in my body. Then pick up this collection.

Five Stars.
