I think this may be the best book in the series yet. Uhtred (the protagonist) is finally a man of some standing and confidence. He doesn't have to spend any of this book proving or discovering himself, and his actions are more self-directed. As such, he does more cool stuff with much less whining.
This plot is also much more focused on bigger-picture strategy. In the past, Uhtred has been a something of a pawn without much awareness of the greater machinations that were unfolding around him. In this book, he is not just aware of the bigger strategic picture but is an active agent trying to directly influence the large scale balances of power. This clarity lends all the actions an extra sense of importance and excitement. That, along with Uhtred's personal ups/downs make this book more epic and more entertaining.
Having said that, I know this series goes on for many more books. I'm starting to worry that the future books could become too formulaic. Even in this book the author had to resort to some gimmicks to try to keep the action fresh, and Uhtred's increasing martial ability risks turning him into a superman. I guess I'll see how that works out.

Brilliant. Another saga that was unnoticed by me until Netflix showed me this wonderful writer and what a wonderful series, Uthred of Bebbangburg.
Rich in details, absorbing and well written, very very much so.
