The third of Cromwell's Saxon Tales books. He seems to have gotten into a groove with the novels, but that's not to say they're predictable, more that you know what you're getting going in. I liked Lords of the North - it's entertaining light reading that gives the flavor of the age of which Cornwell writes.

This took forever to read. I just couldn't get hooked by the story. I thought at first was because I picked this up with a newborn in my house, but it's lacking compared to the first two books. I still had fun, but I found myself speed reading large chunks of the book just to get to the more interesting parts. One of the things I love most about the show is the growth we see in Uhtred as he picks up companions. This book had Uhtred face major difficulty and didn't allow him to grow. Coming out of a traumatic experience Uhtred is just as cocky, brash, and all knowing as ever. I also really dislike Guthred and so getting so much of him was unpleasant. We rushed a major plot point for Uhtred and Ragnar. Overall I had fun in some parts of the book, but there was a lot of wasted potential in this novel.

Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom books have a familiar feel to them. Most of them I have read so far have a similar structure, and I love them for it. You know what to expect from them. They are becoming like comfort food to me.

Yes, the third installment in the series was again an excellent book. The battle scenes written by Cornwell are addicting and never fail to excite me. Add to that the brutal story of Uhtred, and you have the perfect mix of drama and action.

I genuinely love these books. They are well-paced, have fantastic action scenes, and exciting drama. I can't wait to read the next one. In fact, I won't wait.

Never trust a Dane
Bernard Cornwell is going strong with the 3rd installment of The Saxon Stories. The Lords of the North picks up a month or so after the events in The Pale Horseman. Without much breathing time after the epic battle of Ethandun, Uhtred is already on the move. And why not? He's young and there's still much history and storytelling to do.

Strong betrayal and heart wrenching "saving" moments built strong characters in the story.
