All the Saxon Stories books are delightful in their simplicity. Nothing dense or intense, just historically ehhhhccurate swords and Vikings and priests and battles and blood. I read the first two a few years ago when I was caught up in my medieval reenactment society's shenanigans, and watching the latest Thor movie brought me back.

I loved this one so much!!

The pacing was tight and the plot was so smooth and the characters felt really alive.

This was also hands down the funniest one.

Took me ages to read because of work stuff sapping all my time but could easily have read this in one sitting.

  • In madness lies change, in change is opportunity and in opportunity is riches.
  • The other thing I like about our gods is that they are not obsessed with us.
  • Ulf, inspired by a dream of unlimited silver and lascivious women, was now eager to march on Eoferwic.
  • ‘If a man can’t remember the laws,’ Ragnar said ‘then he’s got too many of them.’
  • Perhaps, I thought, his heaven would reward him with a glorious bride but nothing I had ever heard about Christian heaven suggested that such joys were available.
  • The candles were certainly not there for illumination… and I did not want to ask what purpose they served in case he told me.
  • ‘Peace is always desirable.’ Alfred said, though without much enthusiasm.
  • ‘They’ve all gone. Her brother’s taken her to Bebbanburg. Abbott Eadreds with them, and he’s taken Saint Cuthbert’s corpse, of course.’
  • ‘He sent a priest to say we had to pay the Church money! We chased him away. ‘I thought you were a Christian,’ I said. ‘I am,’ Finan said defensively but I’ll be dammed before I give a priest a tenth of my money.’
  • ‘Wipe that blood off your mail Uhtred, we’re an embassy!’
  • Even Abbott Eadred, the guardian of Northumbria’s holiest corpse, was impressed.
  • Because fate cannot be cheated, it governs us and we are all its slaves.

Fantastic read, vivid battle scenes and believable characters, I actually enjoyed the political intrigue stuff (usually not a huge fan)

Trying to avoid echoing my reviews of the first two in the series here - it's just more of a good thing! On to the next one.

Really enjoying this series. Author does a great job making it sound like Uhtred is the one writing this in retrospect. The pace is good, he doesn't drag out events, it's interesting to get a general idea of the time period (and I appreciate that the author lists the things he changes that were historical so those of us not well informed on the time period do get a better idea of the history), and the characters are easy to like, hate, love, and even change opinion on. Can't wait to read the next one!

Probably the weakest Saxon Story novel yet, by which I mean it's a brilliant piece of historical fiction. The plot was solid, but felt more like a series of brilliant but awkwardly connected scenes than previous books. That said, those brilliant scenes truly are brilliant and highly memorable.
