This book is SO good I could not put it down. I had a tough time deciding between it being character or plot-driven because the plot of this book is so straightforward, driving, and easy to feel and understand but ultimately the characters' growth describes their choices and makes me feel tense. We begin with a seemingly normal and very realistic family that ends up in a very 0-100 tense situation and the terror is real. The way that Tom's true character comes to fruition lines up with how Heather would experience finding out who he truly is. The book's resolution is extremely satisfying and every character arc feels real. I love the potential super-naturalness that occurs from the islander's perspective, viewing Heather as a sort of Karma for their past sins. Excellent book; would read again.

This book was not what I was expecting. I honestly think it would make a decent movie, but I didn't like it as a book. The characters were all unlikeable in a way that I think we were supposed to like some of them. The audiobook was so good though. The narrator does a good job, there are sound effects, and it's very well paced.

Heather recently married Tom after his wife passed away. The kids don't like her, they are outwardly hostile. I think the part that gets me is that she didn't want kids, but she wanted the life Tom could give her. Yet not once did she lose it and yell or get annoyed and leave. Heather was so perfect. The young new wife. The completely understanding step mom that never got upset with the kids. The military kid that remembers everything her father taught her about survival. The calm one that's willing to sacrifice herself so that everyone else can survive. I think we were really supposed to like Heather and I found her perfection irritating.
