I went into this with a negative outlook because i saw someone rate it two stars. So I was annoyed to begin with. I will stand by my annoyance when it comes to the narration. The talking directly to the audience, the choice of language and speech (i guess?) was over the top and irritating. I will admit it was a page turner, i wanted to know the outcome the entire time and i read it in a day. But it bored me to have to read through some of the narration, and i did not like the very end that much.

Also very over the name Lana. It's boring.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS = STOP HERE IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS

When we originally learn that Lana was "in on" the play plan with Elliot i was like WTF?! that is SO screwed up to use that to out your partner's affair. But then when we get the background that Lana read the notebook and all that, even still i was like 'ok this is nuts. just cut ties with this freaking stalker.' Crazy way to deal with an obsessive guy and it didn't work out for her in the end.

A page turner but lots of terrible choices by the characters!

Not my favorite of his novels unfortunately. Loved the tone and style in which the story was told but not the story itself.

I enjoyed the last 25% of this book, but it wasn't particularly satisfying because by that point I cared so little about what happened to any of the characters. A twist is good but it falls flat if everything leading up to it has been dull.

I don't know why once authors become financially successful the line editing appears to fly out of the window. "I had a sick feeling in my stomach, like I was going to throw up" was an irritating sentence to read. Was he trying to meet a word count? And as for
Elliot not being killed because the gun fired blanks, if you shoot someone in the head at such close range with blanks, they are going to die or at least be severely injured. A prop gun is...a prop. It doesn't fire anything.
Which Alex Michaelides would know if he'd spent even two minutes looking it up. This was really giving first draft.

I've also realised that I don't ever again want to read a book where the narrator makes so many references to story structure, dear god. That got annoying very quickly.

The Maidens was also boring and disappointing, so I'm not reading another book by this man.

Another great Michaeledes creation.  His ability to describe the madness of a sick mind is crazy.
