This was a reread. I read this originally when it first came out and was OBSESSED with it. I’ve been rereading some of my favorites from when I was younger and this one still lived up to my hype.

Not as good as The Hunger Games but interesting enough.

I loved the book(s) when I was 13 and I can really see why.

It was incredibly easy to get through reading this. The writing is fine. Nothing special but it also isn't horrible.
There are some moments that are logistically weird, where people change places without it having happened (S.260).
I'm kind of surprised at the amount of edginess in this book regarding how popular it was. I suppose most teenagers could relate to this caricaturish over exaggerated edginess. Tris exemplifies teenagers' desire to be selfish, to be cool, to be special, independent and yet part of something bigger. This book is NOT trying to deep, it is a YA dystopia through and through. The comparisons to hunger games are disservice to Suzanne collins.
Divergent is allowed to be a trashy ya book because sometimes people want to read that.
That is commendable. However, Tris lacks any depth. I feel nothing regarding her. This also goes for pretty much every character here.

Generally the book is kind of cold, emotionless.

For example when Tris parents die, I felt nothing. I just couldn't feel the emotional impact.

Surprisingly i both liked and disliked Tris and Fours relationship.
I liked some moments and the way it was written, but i also didn't buy their feelings.
The thing is, i actually like their dynamic. But they skip some steps in their relationship.  There seems to be a spark immediately, which is nothing unusal, but the never makes it up to us as readers WHY there is a spark. And adding to that, i can understand why four likes Tris, but not the other way around lol.
Perhaps it's because of said lacking emotions. Because i really liked their romantic moments OBJECTIVELY but didn't feel it for them, subjectively. They lacked a connection. Again, especially why Tris liked four????

The worldbuilding, well, suspension of disbelief. I don't mind that. The serum works like that because it does and that's fine. We are here for teenage cringe, not everything needs to have intricate worldbuilding.
However, every story weaves some layer of worldbuilding, some rules that the world obeys to.
Here it's the factions. People have one (1) single personality trait. Everyone accepts that.
So why can the Ken accuse the Altruan/abnegtion of being selfish??? Isn't that heresy against the faction system itself? I would understand critique of them as leaders but to accuse them of lacking what should be their literal Identify is weird. They are basically implying the faction system doesn't work. If abnegtdion doesn't have to be selfless a ken doesn't have to be smart. It totally disrupts the worldbuilding.

Also, the author somehow manages shoehorning christianity into this, totally did not see that coming lol.

In conclusion, it was not terrible. I had a great time reading this but it is an objectively bad book. But certainly not horrible. It validated teenage me a lot.

I wanted to like this more as I've set myself a challenge to read the 20 Amazon editors picks of 2013 and I need to get to Insurgent.
Good bits: A very unique story. She sometimes rescues herself (and others) so she's more Lorde than Gomez.
Bad bit: Peter must have some good attributes ... just one maybe ...
Thought: I couldn't help but compare events with the Hogwarts Sorting Hat where there is no opportunity to cry "I am a Hufflepuff not a Slytherin ... "
