I’ve seen this book everywhere and avoided it because I couldn’t believe the hype. But when I caved and read a sample chapter online, I couldn’t put it down for the rest of the day.

I have some qualms with the ending — it felt rushed and came out of nowhere. And I don’t feel fully satisfied with it. But this is a must read.

The main character is an absolutely self-centered, unlikeable person, but something about this novel was so hypnotic. I understand how this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but personally I enjoyed reading the drug-hazed musing of an absolutely miserable and cruel person. I will concede that the execution was not what I expected, but something about this book was so mesmerizing that I devoured it in less than 24 hours.

This book delved into really relevant feelings of the modern era (though its set two decades ago) and had a great ending.

I don’t know how to rate this book. I found it captivating and depressing. Off-putting and strange with some kernels of truth. I don’t know whether I recommend it or to whom, but I’m glad I read it.

3.75 ⭐️ rounded to 4! through a trippy and delusional state, you follow the deeply unlikable narrator desperately seek metamorphosis after a year of ebbing and flowing through states of consciousness. perhaps controversial, but i thought the ending of this book was superb. the way Moshfegh captured depression, the drugged up state of psychosis, and the melodic way of grief settling into your bones… to say Moshfegh is a talented author feels like an understatement. i strongly recommend this read for anyone interested in dark/reflective contemp lit that is easy to read.
