This was an interesting take on the Beauty and the Beast story. I also kept imagining Disney's beast the whole time even though the MMC was a man/god 😂

It took time for me to get into the story as everything was a slow burn (the romance, plot and action). However, I'll say around the 60% mark things started picking up and I became more invested in the fate of both MCs. Orla (Mrs. Potts?!) was definitely my favorite character. Early on I wondered who would be "Gaston" and how they'd be portrayed. I liked the alternate version here though I definitely want more of the history in the next book. Overall, I enjoyed the story, it just took a little time for me to get into it. Now onto the West and South Winds!

Well I got exactly what I came for here- forced marriage, enemies to lovers, slow burn. I’d say this is your classic romantasy but in spite of its predictability, I was entertained by it. Probably the first beauty & the beast / hades & persephone retelling I’ve read recently that actually hit the beats correctly at the start and so I have to give it credit for that. It is nice to see the hatred being mutual with no insta-lust in the background. The author is certainly competent and I enjoyed the romance and the MMC (who is delightfully autism-spec coded) very much.

On the negative side, the pacing was far too fast and clunky (especially in the last 30% which felt rushed) with certain scenes not being given the proper weight for their circumstance. I wanted there to be more lasting impact with a handful of moments but the time jumps would push them past far too quickly. I also felt confused by the world building (or lack there of) at times. The part with the tent and soldiers for example - the distance of things didn’t make much sense and weren’t all the people in his realm “ghosts” so why were these people described as being human and “smelling”?

The side characters didn’t get the depth they should have and I also found the protagonist a bit off-putting at times. Her language was a but juvenile for her age and experience and she talks about having had to survive on her own often and yet her self-preservation seemed to be severely lacking. Not possessing demure, feminine traits does not inherently mean you have to be reckless to the point of idiocy. The ending also was so lackluster with too many loose ends. Felt like the author ran out of time or interest.

The alcoholism is triggering, but also the main character that you are stuck with is kind of insufferable.

I discovered a Dutch edition of the book was released and decided to read that one instead. Marking this one as DNF purely to keep the stats of the 155 read pages, since I started the Dutch one at the very beginning again ;-)
