“The first thing that music must understand is that there are two kinds of music—good music and bad music. Good music is music that I want to hear. Bad music is music that I don’t want to hear.”

Beyond funny. Obsessed with Fran Leibowitz, really excited for her Netflix mini series. She gets away with murder with some of these jokes but she can because she is queer, Jewish, and a woman. The wit very much in the same vein as Wilde or Lorelei Gilmore. Might make the best reads of the year list, glad I own it.
I don't know if I read it at not the right moment in my life; but I genuinely have no idea what Lebowitz is trying to accomplish with any of what she wrote, it feels a lot like she's rambling with no destination 🤷♂️🤷♂️
ok - I had not heard of this person but apparently she's quite famous and quite new york. it was very funny, the schtick starts to get a little old at some points, but it's rare that I ever find myself actually chuckling while reading on the subway. I read the whole thing in a sort of posh british/mid-atlantic accent, so I wonder what she sounds like in real life, and as much as that can be a slightly obnoxious vibe, I really enjoy getting this kind of European "I'm so above everything and witty and don't give a shit" vibe from an American person and about New York rather than about Paris or somewhere stupid. I also am very interested in how this book has aged. I almost feel like maybe someone in the early 2000s might have said that it didn't age well, but now I feel like it's maybe come full circle and I really do feel like we're seeing some of the phenomena she's talking about of "weird neologisms for NYC neighborhoods," or "human spiritual enlightenment programs" or "making a color your whole personality" come back again so it really felt like it worked. I also love how much she loves smoking. I also love how there are certain pieces that I truly did not understand at all because I didn't get the references enough to realize what she was being sarcastic about.
“A great many people in Los Angeles are on special diets that restrict their intake of synthetic foods. The reason for this appears to be a widely held belief that organically grown fruits and vegetables make the cocaine work faster.”
My absolute favourite quote from the book!
My absolute favourite quote from the book!
Amusing though at times dated collection of humorous observations. My favorites were:
- The Nail Bank
- Why I Love Sleep
- Writing: A Life Sentence
- Writers on Strike
- No News is Preferable
- How Not to Marry a Millionaire
- The Pen of My Aunt is on the Operating Table
- Diary of a New York Apartment Hunter
And finally this solid piece of advice from Tips for Teens. “Think before you speak. Read before you think. This will give you something to think about that you didn’t make up yourself - a wise move at any age, but most especially at seventeen, when you are in the greatest danger of coming to annoying conclusions.”
