I found the structure of the book really interesting. The switching between current ghost-status musings by Kazu with his past memories of being alive and the suffering he experienced made for an interesting narrative. Overall it was a sad life for him, and made the inequities in Japan a main part of his story, too. I wish more characters/motives were more fleshed out, but maybe that was the point. Just trying to survive for him made him not have a lot of personality or goals for life, which is a point in itself.

I picked this up because of the beautiful cover at my library, and never expected this short story to make me cry multiple times in such a short period. Some musings seemed fairly random, but at its heart it’s a story of people trying to live through the hardships that life gives them.

this incredibly depressing book highlights family, loss, grief, and poverty. however, it is not particularly memorable imo, I'm writing this quite a bit after finishing it and had to reread the synopsis to jog my memory which isn't a good sign.
