Picked up this book because of the pretty light pink cover with cute illustrations but I didn't expect it to be so tragic and emotional even though I've read from the synopsis that the main theme is homelessness, poverty, and grief. I was really drawn by the exquisite and descriptive writing style. Moreover, I found the historical parts really interesting since I was also fascinated with Japanese history. To be honest I almost thought of dropping this book and not finishing it because I get easily heartbroken by death and I want to avoid being consumed by existential dread.

The book was such a journey, depressing but one worth taking! Like a first person stream of consciousness, full of sensory descriptions of sound and smell, combined with a sadness and regret that you can’t wash away. The protagonist is an old man who dies and recalls his unlucky life of those near him dying prematurely. But some very elegant and efficient passages in the second half of the book, each at the moment of euologizing another fallen character. Short and engrossing!

To be homeless is to be ignored when people walk past, while still being in full view of everyone.

This translated work of Japanese fiction is written beautifully. It gives insight into the lingering (non)existence of a homeless man who reflects on his life, full of tragedy. The disconnect between tradition and industrialization, homeless and comfortable, alive and dead, are well-explored. This is a quietly powerful book, and I recommend it even if for nothing more than its beautiful translation and unique plot.
