Had mixed feelings about this, mostly due to the way the book is written. The lack of chapters is confusing and I often get a bit lost as to whether the protagonist is at the present time, or past, alive or dead. Some parts are good (when I'm not confused) while some parts I speed-read cos I couldn't really be bothered. My book club picked this book and the discussion we had made me appreciate the writing style a bit more. I couldn't have managed to do it on my own, I think.

Beautifully written and tragically sad but this was a boring read for me, unfortunately. Easy to get through quick though!

What drew me to this book was the conversation it had about poverty, and the depth of despair that comes from being in that circumstance. It was very melancholic and a bit disjointed at times.

So, so sad. One of the saddest stories I've read so far, even though I am quite into contemporary Japanese literature (which often is very sad, I've come to realize). I'd advise to be in a state of good mental health when reading this book (and prepare some tissues). But because it was so sad, I think I really was able to improve my empathy for others, especially the homeless, who are often so dehumanized and invisible that we as society lose the ability to feel empathy towards them.

The perfect book for me to read as my cat slowly drifted away in my arms.
