Trigger/Content warning for PTSD, child abuse, death of a parent.
Thank you to Veronica Roth, the publisher and Netgalley for the advance copy of this.
My favourite story in this was Hearken. I enjoyed this short story collection (several have been previously published in other SS collections) and they all have a sci-fi/dystopian twist which I've come to expect from Roth who wrote the Divergent series.
I'm not one to read short stories as a rule, but half of these made me want full length novels and as I imagined, a couple just missed the mark for me.

Although I enjoyed Carve the Mark and The Fates Divide, the related stories were my least favourite in this book. Harken was so touching and is the reason for my 5 stars.
I really loved “Inertia” and I liked Hearken and could have stayed in those stories and worlds longer. The rest I could take or leave. The art was great-black and white illustrations interspersed.

Inertia: 4.25 🌟
The Spinners: 3.5 🌟
Hearken: 5 🌟
Vim & Vigor: 2 🌟
Armored Ones: 2.75 🌟
The Transformationist: 2.75 🌟
Note: I would NOT recommend reading Armored Ones or The Transformationist if you haven't read the Carve the Mark duology as those stories are set in the same universe.
Short stories aren't usually my thing, but The End and Other Beginnings has a few shining stars. Inertia begins mysteriously but was surprisingly emotional for me by the end. Hearken was such a unique idea that left me wanting more.
The Spinners, Armored Ones, and The Transformationist were all good, but felt ... incomplete. (I often feel this way about short stories.)
Vim & Vigor just wasn't for me. Although still sci-fi, it felt like it didn't quite fit with the rest of the stories.
Spice Level: 🔥 (Kisses & Glances)
Did I Cry? Negative, Ghost Rider

I always enjoy Roth’s writing. I’m not a huge fan of sci-fi, but I love the way she weaves “normal” life with science fiction. It makes it seem more possible to have a current gift or a machine that can help me make decisions based on my believes outcomes. It’s all fascinating. I think it would be the coolest thing ever to sit down and have coffee with her and talk about all the ideas she has rolling around in her head.
3 1/2 stars. Some good stories, some so-so, some I wasn't much interested in.

I wouldn't recommend this book to people like me who haven't read "Carve the Mark" before.
Overall, the short stories were fine but nothing extraordinary. In my opinion the book starts with the best story ("Inertia") and ends with the weakest one.

So, I knew it would be good, but I didn’t know it would make me think and feel quite so much. I am also pleasantly surprised because I just really don’t much care for short story collections in general. However, I’m glad I gave this one a chance and I’m sure my enjoyment had something to do with the theme of the stories and the writer. I was trying to decide which was my favorite as I tried to fall asleep last nite and I couldn’t do it. That speaks volumes.
