I personally didn't know that George Orwell had been "down and out" for a long time before becoming an established writer, and it was astonishing to me knowing what he had been through.
The book itself describes his experiences in the two cities, his encounters, what he had to do to live. Further than that, I recommend this book for the chapters where he stops describing and starts analysing the reasons behind poverty and inequality in London and Paris. In these chapters, Marxism is not clearly mentioned, but one could see it behind his thoughts, enhanced by his experience.
The reading experience was swift. Chapters are short and can be read one by one during breaks within the day, and Orwell's writing style makes his struggle to make a living compelling.

Orwell‘s writing style is one of my favourites. This story did not disappoint: he managed to paint a vivid picture of poverty in London and Paris.
