I loved the initial mystery of this book, the writing and the creepy apartment. The back half of the book just did not work for me and was a ridiculous twist I did not like.

I'm so disappointed by this book I don't even know where to start. At first, I was pretty into it. Great banter between the characters. Clines is a good writer. The opening prologue promised a gruesome horror/mystery...then failed me.

There are 2 pretty basic rules when writing that you just shouldn't break. First, don't open a story with horror/mystery then end it with some kind of twisted science fiction fantasy craziness. This story went WAY off the rails. This is my first Peter Clines book, and I hear really great things about The Fold, but this ruined me. I don't want to start another book that promises science fiction then calls Sike! I'm a fantasy!

Second, if you're going to have a romance, you should definitely introduce the romantic hero/heroine before any other possibilities. Nate ran into and actually flirted with Mandy, then she all but disappeared for 3/4 of the book. Then the woman he actually ended up with came as a total shock to me, because I'm waiting for Mandy to start showing up more because she was the first woman introduced. AND Mandy's introduction came in her PoV.

While I generally thought the characters were all well done, one of them grated me. Roger's backstory was that he had a degree in engineering but ended up a grip on movie sets. Sounds all good and fine until he doesn't get a single movie reference, nor is he of any use with the mechanical situation driving the conflict in regards to the building. He was literally the biggest airhead in the group with the wrong backstory to support it. Why is the group's artist figuring out and solving the switch problem in the end, when this guy has a degree in engineering?

At least the narrator was good. I give that dude 5 stars.

Really enjoyed the premise of a strange apartment building that wasn't because of ghosts. Loved the aspect that everyone knew something was weird and had different anomalies in their apartments but no one ever investigated. Some of the premise reminded me a bit of The Lost Room, an underrated TV miniseries from nearly 20 years ago with mysterious rooms and objects and multiple people searching for answers/control of these things. Something about just strange, unknown scenarios that I enjoy. That's why I've always liked shots like Lost, Jericho, and From. 14 is in that realm and had a great time with it.

SPOILER-ish

I won't use the name to try keep it a light spoiler only but the person they used who helped make the building with the initials NT....totally unnecessary. It was such a throw away. It didn't advance the plot or add an additional wrinkle to things. Just seemed like a way to make it a bit more fantastical but totally took me out of it because they didn't build off it to make it important

Unlike anything I had ever read before, very unique and fun read. It gets intense at points but I loved it. The mystery of the building is engaging with a fantasy twist at the end. I loved the mix of real world historic mixed with fantastical beasts. The cast of characters felt real. Sometimes found family books don’t have each character be equally flushed out but all of the people in this book felt believable real and interwoven within the story. I really enjoyed it! The ending was bizarre in a good way, so strange from the rest of the book but it totally fit. Great for science fiction fans who wanna dip their toes into mystery.
