Audiobook - the first book on a CD set of Roald Dahl books read aloud by himself (found at my local library). It is exactly as wonderful as you imagine it would be! This was the perfect story to listen to on a short road trip with the kids. I loved sharing the magic of Willy Wonka with them. I was also struck by how perfectly Gene Wilder’s performance in the film version perfectly matched Mr. Wonka’s mannerisms in the book. The original Oompa Loompa songs are so entertaining too. Just a lovely, lovely story all around!
Probably the best known of Roald Dahl's many books, this is also of those I've read his best. Willy Wonka is a creation of genius, and the Chocolate Factory of Dahl's imagination is a fantastic wonder. I remember visiting the Mars Chocolate factory as a child and was disappointed it wasn't like Wonka's factory. Seeing a Bounty without its chocolate is hardly on a par with the chocolate waterfall of Wonka's factory. The five children who receive the golden tickets to visit Wonka's factory are wonderfully imagined, the spoilt Veruca, the greedy Augustus, the competitive Violet and the TV Crazy Mike Teevee are a great contrast to ordinary but almost saintly Charlie Bucket.

The Tim Burton movie is pretty loyal to the book. I liked how funny and easy to read it is.
