The sci fi twist threw me for a loop and I’m not sure the underlying message hit the way the author intended

I’m so bummed I didn’t like this - I was really looking forward to it! I did not enjoy the plot, and I thought the book was too long for the story. It didn’t dive as deep as I was hoping and the bulk of the book is just background info that felt unnecessary.

Such a phenomenal book! A thriller, surely, but it's an engrossing novel not only because of the mystery, but also because of its deep, honest portrayals of race, society, ambition, and friendships.

As the description says, very Get Out vibes! I can’t say I was expecting the ending but as everything fell into place, it all made sense. Very sci-fi aspect of what causes these changes so that is interesting. Some was hard to keep up with different character povs but that’s probably because I listened to it.

Rating this book is incredibly difficult! Great characters and a great plot. Very cringy moments that were eye-opening and important; as someone who works in a corporate setting, it hit really close to home at times. The last 25% of the book was crazy - not a direction I saw coming at all! With that being said, I wanted more resolution as it pertains to that reveal, especially with characters like Shani. I needed more, which is really the only negative thing I have to say. But my desire for resolution has nothing to do with how well-written and insightful this book is!

i feel really weird saying this about a book about publishing and editing but this needed a lot more editing. bad pacing & random povs from other characters some of whom never show up in the rest of the book + the main thrust of the plot occurs in the last... 50 pages....?
