I wasn’t a fan of the writing style but I when I think about accessibility, this is a good book for transitional readers. I wanted to be more sad … but it was still fine.

I remembered really enjoying this as a middle grader when I had to read it in school so wanted to revisit this as an adult and I'm definitely not disappointed that I did. This time, I plan to continue the series.

This is a really touching story of two boys who become fast friends because they see different qualities they appreciate in each other that they find lacking in themselves. Watching them come to rely on each other in different ways is really touching and it's definitely enjoyable to read about their adventures together.

I really appreciate that this book doesn't veer away from darker subject matter and appreciate that it dives in instead; there are several powerful themes and messages to be found in here. Love the bittersweet ending & I'm curious to see how the story shapes up from here.

Side note, I also remember watching and enjoying the movie adaptation of this years ago with Sharon Stone.
