This was a heart wrenching story. I would give it 3.5 stars.
This was one of the first novels that I read on my own in middle school. As a 'freak' myself, a girl who was bullied and had little family or home to run to at the end of the day, this book spoke volumes to me at a young age... This book touched my heart so many years ago and I will never let go of the sentimental value it still holds to this day.
Sweet YA story. Be careful with sensitive kids, as the ending is a downer and a younger child might not be prepared for it.

A beautiful story of friendship at all costs, of understanding differences based on size, and of the refusal to let the perceptions of others define who you are.
The story has elements that are dated (use of a modem, "The Walton's" television show), but these elements don't detract too much from the larger theme. Told from a male adolescent perspective and voice, this is a great read for pre-teens and early teens.

My 7th grade almost stepson is currently reading "Freak the Mighty" for school and excitedly encouraged me to pick it up so we could talk about it.
At first, I found the language a little unusual even for a middle grade book, but then we are reading about Max Kane's world in his voice. Without ruining the story, it's an "unvanquished" book about friendship and family that had me crying by the end. It's definitely recommended for 6th grade and up.
And don't skip the last 8 pages!

Hollis Library Winter Reading Challenge: A book that became a movie
I remember reading this book in either sixth or seventh grade, and I never realized until recently that it became a movie. It was a good quick read, and a nice stroll down memory lane.
