One of my all-time faves. Funny, electric, philosophical (duh).
In a very short book everything bad you can imagine happens to Candide. The notes for this edition did seem to do a good job explaining some of the references from the text.

I was given the impression that this was going to be a fascinating philosophical text and instead it's just the blandest hero's journey, if you can even call it that. There were one or two moments that made me chuckle (Pangloss explaining to Candide why that one guy was destined to drown in the harbor as the guy actively drowns in front of them) but mostly it felt pointless. Also I'm not the type to go "omg a book by a guy from old times has racism in it" but oh my God with the racism in this book. If you're gonna be a racist, at least have the decency to be good at writing so that centuries later, once you're nice and dead, people can get something out of your work. Anyway, maybe I missed some vital lesson or context here. If I'd read this in an academic setting maybe I would have had a teacher as a guide who knew what the deal is with this book.
