Is it worse to live in constant despair, or to just life in boredom?
At first, Candide bored me. It was just non-stop misery. It felt repetitive and cruel, took me forever to finish. But I love the ending; after all that chaos, Voltaire doesn't give some big fix or happy ending. I was expecting them to go back to their kingdom and took over the crown or something. But instead it's just: "We must cultivate our garden." Simple and weirdly comforting.

interesting certainly although the characters felt sort of stereotypical and like caricatures (i am aware this is a satirical piece but the greatest satire stems from realism no?). i’m not entirely sure what happened but i did like the sentiment at the end.
Although I understand the philosophy behind the story and the satire involved personally I did not enjoy Candide, possibly this was amplified by having read it on one long train ride rather than over several small readings. Despite knowing the point of Candide being slightly stupid in the novel I found him altogether tiresome and was irritated by his treatment of the woman he loved throughout the book. Perhaps one day I'll read it in French and have a deeper appreciation for it, but currently, I am slightly annoyed by it.

ตลอดทั้งเรื่องจะมีแนวคิดหนึ่งที่ว่าด้วยการมองโลกในแง่ดี ที่แม้รอบ ๆ ตัวจะมีแต่ความชั่วช้าสามานหรือภัยพิบัติธรรมชาติต่าง ๆ เกิดขึ้น ก็จะสามารถอธิบายได้ว่า “เป็นโลกที่ดีที่สุดที่พระองค์เมตตาประทานให้แล้ว” หรือเรียกแนวคิดนี้ว่า สุทรรศนนิยม (Optimism) วอลแตร์หยิบเอาแนวคิดนี้มาจิกกัดได้อย่างเจ็บแสบ ไม่เพียงแค่นั้น เขาได้เอาค่านิยมของสังคมในยุดนั้นมาล้อเลียนแบบตรง ๆ ในหลาย ๆ ครั้งก็ออกจะขบขันด้วยซ้ำ อย่างเช่นในประโยคนี้ที่วอลแตร์จิกกัดคริสตจักรในยุคนั้น “อะไรกัน พวกท่านไม่มีนักบวชซึ่งชอบสั่งสอน ชอบทะเลาะถกเถียง ปกครองประชาชน วางแผนให้ร้ายป้ายสี และสั่งเผาคนที่ไม่เห็นพ้องด้วยทั้งเป็นเลยหรือ”
ก็องดิดเป็นปรัชญานิยายชวนขันที่อ่านสนุก เนื้อเรื่องดำเนินฉับไวและมีการเสียดสีที่เขียนออกมาได้ขำขันดี และยิ่งถ้ามีความรู้เกี่ยวกับบริบทสังคมและประวัติศาสตร์ในยุคนั้น ก็จะทำให้อ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้ได้ลึกซึ้งขึ้นไปอีก
