This book is a masterclass in toxic optimism. What a silly story surrounding a serious message. The satire is the best I’ve read. Sorry Leibniz, I’m granting the win to Voltaire.

I knew this was going to be a fun read as soon as he named a German territory “Thunder-ten-trockh”. It’s just so damn silly that it works even if Leibniz, the Jesuits, and Voltaire’s personal enemies are the targets for satire that they used to be.

A humorous classic that in many ways was so ahead of its time in its "everything that can go wrong will go wrong" adventures and philosophies, not to mention the fantastical things that happen to Candide every step of the way that had me wondering several times throughout this short book if the end would be him waking up and the whole thing was a drug-induced fever dream. One thing is for sure - French dry humor slapped in the 18th century and it slaps today.

In a world that thrives on satire this book doesn't really resonate or cause any strong feelings within me. I suppose it might have shaken my worldview if I lived in a different time... supposing I was even allowed to read this novel.

The ruthless death, and on the nose, messaging doesn't really work for me. The rashness of it takes away from the message in my eyes.
