I taught this as part of a world literature class. It was a challenging book but very interesting. It reminds me of Peer Gynt in its scope. Memorable characters and a lovely ending.

Re-read to remember one of my first politically motivated, society reflection novels. Good and quick read. Still relevant.

It was great...until it wasn't. Powerful messages but it became redundant and boring.

What the actual fuck even was that book. Maybe it‘s just me generally disliking Voltaire but by god, this was one of the most ridiculous plots I’ve ever read (which is a thing I would normally love) and despite of that it still somehow manages to be boring to no end and annoy the fuck out of me with its dated opinions on literally anything.
