In The Trouble with Hating You, we meet Liya, a happily single woman who has a successful biochemical engineering career and is not interested in marriage, despite the pressures from her family and community.  Her parents attempt to introduce her to a man they’d like her to consider for marriage and she initially bolts, however they ultimately build a friendship through a shared workplace and a number of run-ins.

Over the course of their slow-building love story we learn about his past and her past, both containing traumas they’ve been carrying.  As they learn to trust each other and their relationship develops, the author also gives storylines to their friends and families to round out the picture of their network.  There’s feisty banter, deep friendships, trauma processing, and romance – all wrapped up in a charming book.  While there are challenging topics, the main feeling I had from the book was hope and rebuilding.  It was a quick and enjoyable read.

This was a tough read because I just kept screaming “why aren’t you in therapy?!” at pretty much every character.

It took a little while to get into this one - until that hurt-comfort scene after the diner. Yes please. I would take 8 million of those moments over explicit spice. It stayed PG-13 through the whole book. There was a lot of other things to love: Indian culture, female friendship, family connections, a whole bunch of #metoo drama, and main characters with interesting backstories and lives.

My issue here was on the writing side. The pace was often slowed down by clunky dialogue. Trying to get too much delivered that way, resulting in obvious exposition. Conversations that just went on too long. Bumpy transitions. Important stuff just dumped into scenes and not drawing the reader's attention to it. It lacked some finesse, I guess.

But overall, I liked it. I understood why liya put up her walls, even if that tough exterior was sometimes infuriating to read. And Jay is a man written by a woman. Need I say more?
