The first half or so reads like a Harry Potter clone but it is so much better than that

This story follows Call as he’s getting ready for this magical test that will determine wether he goes to this magic school called the Magisterium and he’s desperately trying to fail. His whole life his fathers told him that if he goes there he’ll die and that the mages only care about themselves all because of something that happened during a war. While trying to fail Call actually ends up getting accepted and placed with one of the top mages so that whole plan backfired.
I really enjoyed the friendship Call forms with his two other apprentices under his mage. I can’t wait to see what shenanigans Call, Aaron and Tamara get up to next. And they have a pet wolf, just stop.
But especially with that reveal...I just need to know more. I need to know what’s going to happen, if things are going to start popping up, if it’ll go down another path...

Very dark, interesting twist on Chosen One, dramatic ending, friendship, soul of enemy embedding in him as baby
Callum Hunt wurde von seinem Vater schon immer dazu erzogen, dem Magisterium, der Schule für Zauberei, zu misstrauen. Zu sehr nagt der Tod seiner Frau im letzten Magierkrieg noch immer an Callums Vater.
Leider wird Callum trotzdem „eingezogen“ und findet sich fortan eingeschlossen in der unterirdischen Schule vor. Ein geheimnisvoller Ort, wo er nach und nach lernt, seine magischen Fähigkeiten zu kontrollieren.
Und irgendwie sind seine Mitschüler Tamara und Aaron auch ganz nett und setzen sich für ihn ein, wenn er z.B. wegen seines lahmen Beins gehänselt wird. Gemeinsam erleben sie so einige Abenteuer, und vielleicht ist Call etwas ganz Besonderes, ein magisch Begabter, der im Kampf gegen den bösen Chaos-Magier XY das Zünglein an der Waage für die Guten sein könnte.
Ziemlich 08/15 für mich als erfahrene Fantasy-Leserin… Aber trotzdem gut geschrieben und Harry Potter in einigen Punkten ähnlich (z.B. drei Freunde, tödliche Abenteuer, eine Gefährdung durch einen bösen Magier, eine Halbwaise, die ein neues Zuhause in einer Zauberschule findet, jeder Band ein neues Schuljahr, …). Die weiteren 4 Bände werde ich vielleicht 2022 lesen.

Callum Hunt's father has told him over and over that the Magisterum is evil. He is insistent that Call throw the entrance tests so that he doesn't get picked. He blames magic for killing Call's mother and wants nothing to do with it anymore. But even though Call does his best to bungle every test, he still ends up chosen to go. Once he arrives, he finds that it isn't the awful place that his father told him it would be. He has friends for the first time, and seems to be pretty good at his schoolwork. So why does his father want him out? What secrets is he afraid that Call will learn? A great start to a new fantasy series. Recommended for grades 4-8.

The Iron Trial: Spoiler Review I really loved this book. I found it to be a nice throw back to harry potter. I did not see it as a copycat but i book told in similar style.
I loved the three lead characters that were developed in this book and I am excited to see where all these relationships go in future books. I loved callum and Aaron a lot but all the character just made me happy.
I loved the twists and turns that were thrown at you in the book and they were so unexpected that they even surprised me. I did not expect the truth about Callum identity at the end and that is why i am so excited for the next book in this series. I want to see where everything goes and what happens to all the character in future books.
I really loved how the world and the magic was created in this world and the focus on nature it is such a cool world and you can tell that holly black put her master touch on this world.
