Great middle grade fantasy novel. No romance, not too violent, sufficiently creepy.
Cute book about some adorable kids. Might not be the Great American Novel but very readable. The influence of other popular fantasy books is clear but the world is interesting enough. It would have been nice to see some more of Holly Black's influence here.

M i k s i en ole lukenut tätä aiemmin? Olipa viihdyttävää ja hyvää fantasiaa, jota voi suositella niin lapsille (5. luokkalaisista eteenpäin, sanoisin), kuin vähän vanhemmillekin lukijoille (henk. koht. tragediani on, että saan jatkoa käsiini aikaisintaan huomenna!).
Kirjasarjaa on verrattu Potteriin, eikä syyttä. Kirjassa on paljon samaa, kuin Potterissa. Välillä lukiessa aivan unohdin, ettei kirjan pääkolmikko ole Harry, Ron ja Hermione, vaan ihan muita tyyppejä. Mutta kun pääsin tästä yli, oli tarina kiehtova ja nautittava.
Luin tätä viime yönä yöunien kustannuksella (onneksi tänään oli vapaapäivä) ja jatkoin heti aamupalalla.
Jos mieli halajaa hyvää fantasiaa, niin ei tämä ole hullumpi vaihtoehto.

Initially I tried reading this in January and really didn't get on with it. I picked it up again from the library on a whim and am so glad I did! Yes I see the similarities to Harry Potter but there are also huge differences. I am interested to see if Aaron's change in status affects the dynamic and friendship between the three, and if Callum confronts his Dad about the secrets he's kept.
This was a bit tougher for my kids since it is more slow paced than Percy but they enjoyed it nonetheless.
The book drew me in from the beginning, a great prologue that left you hooked and intrigued for the rest of the book. I did struggle with some of the characters however as a whole the book was an amazing blend of two great authors.
Nijedan serijal se ne može porediti sa Hari Poterom, tako da ja nisam ni pokušavala da to učinim. Sreća je da uopšte nađem na ovakvu priču, sa dobrom/mračnom magijom, školom i zanimljivim likovima. Reći ću samo da obrt na kraju ove knjige, niko ne očekuje :O

2.5 Stars. Too much of a knockoff of my Harry. The overuse of the words stalactite and stalagmite drove me bonkers. I adore fantasy novels, but this was a STRUGGLE.
