I'm doing a project in class on the representation of disability in manga. So far there seems to be more manga about hearing impairments than anything else. The first volume is all back story, I'd be interested in reading the rest because the anime is so good.

Graphic novels/manga are so captivating. I didn't read many last year, and it's sad to imagine the incredible storytelling I overlooked. But, it's never too late! A Silent Voice served as the perfect reentry into the genre with its poignant narrative and raw exploration of childhood, friendships and bullying. The manga challenges readers to reconsider forgiveness and second chances. I'm eager to see the evolution of Shoya and Shoko's dynamic in the upcoming volumes.

This manga is heartbreaking and worth every single bit of pain. It is a story about bullying related to disability (and trying to make it right again) that is told in a sensitive manner from multiple perspectives. The series as a whole honestly made me sob on multiple occasions. This is a very important story for teenagers and adults alike, but may not be appropriate for younger readers. The art is beautiful and the sign language really pops off the pages. This manga is in part sponsored by the Japanese Federation of the Deaf, so it is sure to be accurate in depicting the struggles of a Deaf character and her family. Koe no Katachi is getting a movie adaptation in 2016! :D
