this book follows a palestinian woman named amal, from her birth in jenin during the nakba to her eventually fleeing to the united states and having a child of her own. it’s kind of hard to put my feelings about this book to words. i don’t think a fictional book has gutted me this much, because this book isn’t all that fictional. what an incredible debut novel. i can’t wait to read more of susan abulhawa’s books.

This book is absolutely heartbreaking. The author masterfully describes Palestinian history, capturing every detail with an evocative prose. What makes it even more disturbing is how the depictions of violence mirror the ongoing genocide, making it feel as though history is repeating itself before our eyes(And it is). It is a must-read for anyone seeking to educate themselves on this. I couldn't put the book down and read it in one sitting; the author's way with words is truly compelling.
