WARNING! This book is NOT a gay rom-com. Yes, there is a gay couple that is about to get married, but honestly, they are not the main characters. This book is about a widowed middle-aged woman who lives on a farm in rural Louisiana and her character growth. She has dreams and she has to learn over the course of the novel that these are HER dreams, not her son's dreams.

This novel is more along the category of women's fiction, novels that deal with serious topics, but too often in a superficial way. Don't get me wrong, I love a well written women's fiction novel, and this was not terrible. But it's also not a novel that will live in my heart and mind forever.

TW: There is a LOT of homophobia and an alcoholic parent played for laughs

Chrissy Durang runs the Polite Society Ranch. Her husband is deceased and her son Barnett lives across the country so she's a bit lonely. When Barnett returns for a visit, Crissy plans to ask him to take over the family business. However, Barnett has other plans. He wants to get married - to a man - and his mother is more than a little homophobic.

Big Gay Wedding is a rollercoaster of emotions. At times it's laugh-out-loud funny while at others it's a combination of enraging and sad. It started off moving at a quick pace but started to drag in the middle and didn't really let up for the remainder of the story.  There were a lot of characters, many of which seemed unnecessary to the story. It was entertaining overall, but I think it could have done with a little more editing. 3.5/5 stars

Thanks to Henry Holt and Co. and NetGalley for a review copy of this book.

This was cute - it definitely had Schitt's Creek vibes, right down to the chaotic hodgepodge of characters. There wasn't a whole lot of plot - mostly things just kind of cleared themselves up and no problems lasted for long, but a story about a gay couple who doesn't have tragic problems is one that probably isn't told enough, so it was a good fit.

All of the characters were way over the top, but honestly, it fit with the book. I particularly loved the plotline about Chrissy and the farm - that was a lot of fun.
