Fun and creative! This is a portal story with a wall of 100 Cupboards that lead to other places. I read the prequel to this book first and must admit that I enjoyed the characters we follow in the prequel more than the ones in this story. I will still continue with the series and see where it leads.

Listened to this with the kids. Cool middle grade book.

I think this is one of these series that I begin to like more and more as I read the progression of this trilogy. While obviously a children’s series, I found it super enjoyable to read as an adult, and appreciated seeing elements that actually would encourage responsibility in kiddos (Ex: Adults aren’t idiots and actually have their children’s best interests in mind... WILD.) I liked it! Can’t wait to read the others!

This book is fantastic. The writing is descriptive, detailed and emotive. There are some parts of the book where the action is slow but that is part of the genius of the writing. The plot unfolds in the same way the main character, Henry, emerges causing the reader to experience the action just as Henry is experiencing it. From the slow start to the rapid fire pace of the end the reader's emotions are engaged with Henry. The magical concepts used in this book are nothing new but the way they are executed is unique and imaginative.

3.5. Cute. I'll probably read the sequels, though I'm not running out to get them right away. Took me about a third of the way to get into it, but I blazed through the last third. Some well-rounded characters and lots of potential for future books.

Great book. I really enjoyed it. There was one part at the beginning that I thought was a brush off but it was resolved in the end. Can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy. This is the type of book where I wish there really were magic cupboards.

Interesting little children's book. Reads like a Tim Burton movie full of quirky characters. Misfits abound.

Sends shivers up my spine sometimes, and sometimes boring, sometimes confusing. Kind of weird. But I really like Henry. He seems smart, resourceful. Except kind of sad.

It took me a little while to get into this story, but once it got moving, I finished it in two sittings. It's exciting (if a little scary in parts) and original. I love the idea of the cupboards and the worlds and how they work. It was a little reminiscent of the Wood Between Worlds (from The Magician's Nephew by C. S. Lewis) but it didn't feel like it was trying to copy that.

The prose was pretty good, but felt like it was trying too hard in places, and I found the ending unsatisfying. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I was disappointed by the end. I like the *idea* behind the books, and I'd potentially try book two, but I don't feel strongly either way.

Thanks to my eight year old friend who loves to lend me books like these <3

Note: If you have kids that are a little sensitive to creepiness, then I advise reading this book for yourself before sharing it with them. There's a horrible witch with no eyes, magic(?) wolves, and some mild threat and violence.
