What a beautifully written, imaginative and thought-provoking book!
A is a sixteen-year-old being, who wakes up every day in a different body, a different life. All the ‘hosts’ are the same age as A, but some are popular and beautiful; some are sick or unfit; some live comfortable, happy lives; others are living in hell.
A is neither male nor female, gay nor straight. When you change bodies every day, all notions of gender identity and sexual orientation are rendered meaningless – A is just A.
A falls in love. It’s a teenage thing. It doesn’t really matter who A fell in love with or whether they deserved that love – the romance is merely a catalyst for A to question its existence and what alternatives there may be.
One of the best books ever….

The premise of this book is simple. One soul. Many lives.
How do you live in a different body every day? Some days a girl, some days a boy, always the same age as you would be if you had your own life.
And what happens if, one day, you meet the love of your life?
And you know, at the end of the day, you will never, ever see them again.
And your heart is broken.
Levithan's thoughtful novel revolves around many difficult and interesting ideas - gender, love, relationships, and how much of 'you' can you release into the life of your host before you start to affect their life. What can you do when your host body is a drug addict, or gay, or in an abusive relationship, or happy?
The basic premise of this book kept me going until the end, which was satisfying and believable, although the story felt like it got lost for a while in the middle - I just wanted the narrator and the love of the life to get themselves sorted out - but really, that's the tiniest, little gripe.
Such a great idea, well-written, and with a few absolutely 'gasp' moments.

This book has one of the best concepts I've heard in recent years. It was handled really well and I liked A's characterisation and his attitude and everything. I wasn't so fond of Rhiannon. Didn't really see what A saw in her.
I can't help but be corny and say how important I think this book is for gender confused teenagers. It's really fucking important. I just wish the issue of overweight people had been handled better. The fat character was fat because he's lazy? Really? The book was inclusive towards gays, lesbians, transgender people and was simultaneously incredibly harsh to fat people. The message delivered ended up being one of 'people of all races, genders and sexualities are regular people deep inside and should be accepted as such but fuck fatties because they brought it on themselves'.
Spoiler
She was so judgmental over whether he was a girl or a boy and whether he was attractive or not (read: fat)! I don't know how he put up with it when he was in a different body every day and he was so accepting because he had to be. In fact he let himself become more judgmental because of it instead of correcting her attitude! That really pissed me off. And I was a little annoyed at him ruining people's days/weeks/lives just trying to keep talking to her because of the amount of times she tried to cut him out of her life. I understand her reason - because she wanted stability - but still. I also really hated the ending though. He just chose some guy for her to be with and she just went along with it? Seems weird as hell to me. It made sense for him to leave her in the context of his character but he chose his own replacement? Is she incapable herself?I can't help but be corny and say how important I think this book is for gender confused teenagers. It's really fucking important. If it’s written by David Levithan then I’m going to read it and I’m going to love it. There’s not much mystery when I pick up one of his books. I know to expect something amazing and they always exceed my expectations. Every Day was no exception. As soon as I read the authors note* at the beginning I knew this was something different.
Every Day takes a very unique concept, waking up in a different body everyday and add in elements that you would probably never consider. Like waking up in an addicts body, or waking up with grief that’s so fresh that you feel it even though it’s not part of your life. It also explores how a person’s exterior can affect how you feel about them. Even if you would like to think it doesn’t.
Every Day is very much a book about love and all the little factors we never think about when it comes to making those feelings work for us. The main character, known simply as A, may be in a different body everyday but you definitely get to know him/her. I’m going to go ahead and call A a he for the sake of this review but A was neither female or male.
I loved how kind A was. He was a little lost and that was so understandable. But he was also incredibly strong and insightful. The lengths that he went to for Rhiannon were great to see. He was a wonderful main character.
Not only do you get A and Rhiannon’s story but you also get little glimpses into the lives of the bodies that A ends up in. I thought that was beyond creative. You never know who A will wake up in next or what situation he will find himself in. It made the book a page turner.
As you can see I loved the book. That’s no surprise though, right? If you’re in the mood for a breath of fresh air kind of book then I highly recommend Every Day. It’s a marvelously unique read.

this is more like a 2.5 star rating.
I had pretty high hopes for this, I was kind of disappointed in the end. I have very mixed feelings about A being "genderless." personally, I don't believe that someone can be genderless. we have male and female spirits that inhabit boy and girl bodies. transgender people feel they have the wrong spirit in their biological bodies, which is fine and everything, who am I to judge? but I just do not buy the whole not identifying as male or female thing...it goes against common sense. if a spirit has no gender, it would not be a person. it would not exist. it would not feel emotions the same way a male or female spirit does.
so THAT was just whatever.
also, I'm getting really sick of the whole "instalove" thing. especially with teenagers. then again, maybe I'd feel differently if I had been a horny teenager. but I doubt it.
overall, this was just meh to me.

One of my favourite books of all time.
I rarely read/like a book that has been bought for me, because I find that only I know exactly what I would like to read (which has so often been proven wrong by almost everyone in my life) in fact, every book that is the top of my lists was chosen by; my mother, my aunt or my boyfriend.
This book was given to me for Christmas in 2012 by my mother. I put off reading it for a couple of weeks before I decided that I would read the whole thing in one sitting, accidentally.
I couldn't get enough of A. I couldn't get enough of the mystery of his/her life. I couldn't get enough of the emotions portrayed through the words. I quite literally have fallen in love with this book. And to add to it all, the front cover is absolutely GORGEOUS (I may have a thing for floating people and clouds...)
Every Day challenged me. I am kept up some nights just imagining A's past and future life, how A exists, what A is, who A is... everything I can possibly think of. I followed the story very precisely and myself have not found a flaw, everything seems to be justified.
The ending, yet again, left me with a book hang-over. I am developing a love-hate relationship with stories that don't have a definite conclusion. I now need to buy the e-book Six Earlier Days and hope that if it at least doesn't give me closure then hopefully it will refresh me of my hang-over.
I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE.
David Levithan I'm told is a lesser known author in the world of books, and I have absolutely no idea why. He deserves to be read!
