i wanted to love this book, but it was indeed difficult to love. the pacing was very slow and the plot did not really begin until 200 pages in. and it was so predictable!!! all the big reveals? well i'm sorry but it was not as crazy as it was made out to be. :/

3 stars, but it's complicated.

The central philosophy of this book is really interesting and explored well: white supremacy, patriarchy, and eugenics as the "man behind the curtain" in horror is an idea I would like to see in more horror/thriller fiction (in the vein of GET OUT). The exploration of generational trauma was also excellent, particularly how women are often the carriers of the trauma.

That said, I really didn't need to know that the ghosts were mushrooms, and the neat tie-up of the romance at the end didn't do it for me. Also, some of the descriptions were gross just to be gross, so know that going in.

While I thought that the
mushrooms being the explanation for what was happening
was very cool, there were huge sections of this book that I really did not enjoy reading. Maybe this just isn’t the genre for me, but the villains were so hateful and repulsive that reading about them made me dislike the book as a whole. I haven’t read a lot of gothic fantasy so I’ll try another at some point to see if it’s just the genre or the book itself that I didn’t like.
