The first half of the book is a little slow, redundant, however once it gets to the second half it's so inmersive I couldn't stop reading (although the first past took me more than a year to get through)

This book. Would it be too much of a spoiler to say this is like the lovechild of August Derleth and Daphne Du Maurier? It starts off all high society then spins out into something from an H.P. Lovecraft nightmare of evil. I read it all in one day... Couldn't stop!

WHY do people say it's a slow burn? They should read My Cousin Rachel or Uncle Silas, then get back to me on that. Taking a star off for some unbearably, hideously grotesque, disgusting and evil elements, but that's part of the price when reading Gothic!

Overall, "Mexican Gothic" traps you in a mesmerizing and chilling experience, offering a culturally rich and fresh perspective to the gothic horror genre. With its captivating setting, characters, and a plot that takes unexpected turns, offering a satisfying resolution that I did not foresee, diverging from the conventional paths some elements seemed to promise. This is a book well worth reading for fans of horror and historical fiction alike.
