This. This book is written amazingly. How the author could make a book’s plot so complex and puzzling, yet still be able to keep the reader’s interest, takes real skills.

I’m not a fan of love triangles, and that is the only thing that puts me off about the book. Other than that, It's absolutely worth the read.

I gave this a 3.5 because it didn't truly wrap anything up at the end, it set up book #2 which is frustrating for me. If things had been wrapped up this would have been a 4 star read for me.

Avery is your normal 16 year old high school student who just wants a chance at college and a stable career. She has a plan to make that happen, until she is set to inherit Tobias Hawthorne's entire fortune. Yet, she has never met the man. Upon moving into the house she meets the grandsons that she beat for the inheritance and tries to survive riddles, puzzles, and dysfunctional family dynamics all in the name of a stable future.

The chapters were short and reminded me a bit of reading the online published serials that were only about 1000 words per release. However the short chapters kept you going because you wanted to know what happened next. I was seriously frustrated with the lack of diving deeper into the personalities of the Hawthorne grandsons. Avery was literally running to solve these puzzles with the grandsons but you got more of a surface level delve into who they were. I wanted to understand them more but even the deeper you got into their personalities at the end didn't feel like a true look at them.

The games that Tobias made them play leading up to the end was twisty and I had thoughts and opinions throughout the entire book and honestly enjoyed the thrill of the novel. Again, if I had a bit more wrapped up at the end for me and the characters were a bit more fleshed out I would have given this a 4/5.

I don’t know why the marketing and cover make it seem more like a Hunger Games type situation, but this is more of a scavenger hunt deal. I vibed with it, I just don’t want anyone to go into it expecting something different.
-This was fun and fast paced!
-unnecessary love triangle… I honestly wouldn’t take this book too seriously in that area though. Like it’s good because the plot is fun and all but there’s this like thing with jealous guys trying to show dominance or whatever which is very juvenile. Takes me back to early YA books.
-Bi side character, wlw relationship mentioned briefly. There are people of color, but they’re mostly side characters from what I remember
-there a point where a character talks about how charities are better than helping out individual people and yada yada yada. He’s a white cishet man and he grew up rich. Of course he thinks that way. This is just a person opinion of mine so you can take it with a grain of salt, but from what I’ve heard from marginalized people, donating to individuals *IS* better than donating to large charity groups. But I guess I should be happy they donated the fictional money in the first place lol

CW:
-there is a toxic relationship with mental and physical abuse
-also attempted murder twice
first with a gun, second with an attempted car crash

-there’s a character with a terminal illness and it shows how
another character watched her die, and a few of the characters blame themselves for her death.

I really liked how enticing this books was and all the relationship each character had with each other. There were lots of plot holes somewhat filled and plot twists (though I thought some of them were obvious). Though I think this book is good for and set as more for Middle Schoolers, the only thing I would acknowledge as the huge role romance takes place and affects the plot.

I liked this book. But it just didn’t wow me in a way that I wanted it to. I am probably going to read the rest of them because I liked the mystery scavenger hunt aspect of it, but I felt like everything was too connected. Like almost no struggle.
