"a very risky gamble"
ARE YOU JOE KING
this book blew me away, i came into it with high expectations as i've been wanting to read this series for aaages but honestly it was even better than i'd hoped
first of all the writing is really gripping, the short chapters really help to make this binge-worthy and quick to get through. i love how clever and mysterious the main character is and i find her really likeable and ofc libby too my angel <333
the hawthorne brothers oh my, i understand the hype i really do. i just know that grayson is gonna be the winner in my eyes already, it really is gonna be an aaron warner situation i can feel it. the second guy in the triangle always has to win
nash is a cutie, i'm loving the soft, protective big brother vibe he has going on and his little flirts with lib<3 so so cute
xander is so funny i can already tell he'll be just like kenji in the shatter me series, honestly everything is just reminding me of shatter me even though they're a complete contrast but the love interest and characters are somewhat similar
jameson i do love i can't lie but grayson is just... it's always the one that is uninterested and has barely any scenes that i always want to root for but we shall see
so far it's an easy 5 stars because i could not put it down and i'm a sucker for mystery romance it's definitely my favourite genre / sub-genre
"not the hawthornes' house, just hawthorne house, like it was some kind of English manor"
"i told you she was special"
"that's the thing mystery girl, i don't think i'm turning anything into a riddle. you are a riddle, a puzzle, a game, my grandfather's last"
"he left you the fortune avery, and all he left us was you"
"jameson hawthorne is a very bad idea"
"i need you. i don't know why yet but i do"
"there's no one like jameson"
"kissing him felt like fire"
"you don't have to kiss me. you don't even have to like me, heiress. but don't make me do this alone"
"there's nothing more hawthorne than winning"
he gently traced the line of my jaw, "i won't let anyone hurt you again. you have my word"
"a very risky gamble"
"this can't happen avery. i've seen the way jameson looks at you"

Such a fun book to read! There were plot twists till the very last page (literally). Right when you thought you knew what was going on you were fooled again. It’s fast paced and actually never got boring.

Highly recommending this to anyone who likes easy but interesting reads and likes a good mystery

I’m intrigued after the first book, but felt long for the reveal. That said, read it in a day so that’s always a good sign!

I nearly gave this book 5⭐️. I had all intentions on it but I didn’t love the ending. It fell a little flat for me. The rest of the book was fantastic though. I was on the edge of my seat all the way until the end.

Sooo torn on my rating but I think I'm going with 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the premise of this book immensely - an unsuspecting high school student suddenly inherits a billionaire's estate who she has never met, and has to live in his crazy mansion with his even crazier family? Sign me up. I also appreciated all of the different aspects of family dynamics and the many, many, MANY layers of the Hawthornes and Hawthorne-adjacents. And I always love a book with plot-twists and cliff hangers. However, this book breezed past some topics and events that needed more explanation. Avery lets so many things go without questioning them, even when that choice makes absolutely no sense. She would repeatedly talk/think about how she wanted to know more about XYZ thing, but she wouldn't actually ask the person or try to find out, with no apparent reason for that choice, which was frustrating as a reader. If she had searched for answers and found none, that would have created what I assume is the intended air of mystery. I'm a firm believer that not every loose end must be tied up by the end of a book, but there is such a thing as too many loose ends.

But overall, a solidly enjoyable book with a crazy good cliff hanger.
