Hellblazer is a bold debut for Constantine’s solo comic, and even 30 years later I see why it was such a success. The stories remain compelling, with interesting characters, clear messages, and phenomenal artwork. Still some of the most interesting layouts I’ve seen—very reminiscent of Moore’s Swamp Thing run. Despite being forward-thinking for its time in some ways, it also very much shows its age and the limits of its writer in a way that would reasonably put off some readers. It’s tie-ins with Swamp Thing also may be confusing to those who haven’t read ST, but this collection at least does include the most relevant Swamp Thing issues.

American comic books are so confusing. Like this should be the first stories and I had almost never any clue who the characters are or what’s going on. I still love Constantine as a character, he’s such a mess, but the whole American comic book culture is weirding me out I don’t know how to describe it, I‘m sorry

I didn't dislike HellBlazer but I did find it hard to follow and the stories weren't exactly normal

It's literally been fifteen years since I read this, so I'd forgotten both the monster of the week (month) format and the sheer volume of slur-spewing bigots. The late '80s occult noir vibe remains promising, though.

Inspired by Legends of Tomorrow, I decided to check out some Hellblazer comics and y'all.........................this shit is WILD. Truly living for the knowledge that Swamp Thing possessed Constantine's body and got a tattoo of a tree on his butt cheek.

DID NOT FINISH: 6%

Love John Constantine as a character, but these comics are just not my style- I don't love the art style (an issue that I have with the majority of 80s comics) and tonally, it's not what I enjoy. I did think it was pretty good so far, though- just not the sort of thing I personally enjoy.
